NWOAHM: Trivium – Ascendancy
One of the coolest bands to blossom from the NWOAHM wave is Trivium. What I liked the most about this band was that the members were really young when they signed to Roadrunner to release ‘Ascendancy’. I was 15 years old and they were just 3 years older than me. This was the first time a big major metalband were almost the same age as me, and this was pretty cool. I saw Matt Heafy and his bandmates shine and conquer every possible metal media and they were definitely the hottest band back then. They still are a very very successful metalband and they created a sound that is a typical ‘Trivium’ trademark. I was a huge Matt Heafy fan as a kid and I remember watching a lot of interviews he did, and he was such a cool and nice guy. I really felt connected to him because he was so humble and because of his Asian heritage. Being half asian in the metal scene really isn’t easy and because he made it work he became a role model to me.
